This piece was commissioned by one of my closest friends, Sarah. She had given me complete freedom to build whatever I wanted with no parameters of any kind. I spent a lot of time searching for the right woods. I wanted to use a lot of organic and natural lines. I ended up naming it “The Line’s” as if the piece belonged to the lines that I designed it around. Two of my largest influences are Sam Malooff and Vladimir Kagan. As a result, the focal point on this piece is the abstract leg. The lighter plantation teak behind the ipe was selected to accentuate the leg. I feared the leg might be a bit over dramatic, so I really tried to tie it in with the rest of the piece by making it look as though it had mutated or evolved from the piece itself. The leg is connected in as many places or points as possible to the rest of the piece, except the teak. I wanted to give the leg more of a structural look almost like a pillar. The drawer pulls were a lot of fun. I did it using a lathe, table saw and bandsaw. I wanted to end up with something that resembled a wave, which would add to the overall organic feel of this piece. Finding the perfect wood for the doors was the essential for this piece. Even when I selected the boards I then had to match the joints, making it look like one solid panel of teak with the white sapwood making dramatic appearances which ended in sharp points. This custom hardwood piece now resides in San Diego.
